What is a mattress in a box?

It sounds like a no-brainer but if you’re new to the whole boxed mattress scene, it’s good to know what to expect. Are they different to traditional mattresses? What makes them more convenient?

In this guide, we’re covering all of the basics so you can decide whether the benefits of a mattress in a box are right for you. And we’ll be looking at the whole process from order to installation.

Boxed mattresses: the basics

How does a mattress in a box work?

It’s pretty clever – in order to fit into a box, these mattresses are tightly rolled up and vacuum packed so that they take up substantially less space.

The real magic happens when you unbox it. Once you remove it from its packaging, the mattress slowly expands into its full size and… voila! You’ve got one full-sized mattress.

Traditional sprung mattresses usually have a structure that doesn’t allow them to be rolled up. And it’s for this reason boxed mattresses are either made with a ‘hybrid’ design (a mix of memory foam and pocket springs) or from pure memory foam.

Are they any different to a standard mattress?

Nope. A mattress in a box is designed to provide a fantastic night’s sleep, just like any other mattress. Although we will say that it’s worth doing your research beforehand as cheaper brands can vary in terms of quality.

Since OTTY was first established, quality and wellbeing have always been the top of our list. That’s why we offer the largest and most supportive pocket springs of any boxed mattress at 16cm deep. Our mattresses are still very affordable though and we’re rated ‘excellent’ on Trustpilot too!

Why buy a boxed mattress?

For a lot of people, visiting every mattress shop in town won’t be their idea of fun. There’s a lot of time and hassle that goes into traditional mattress shopping, so having one conveniently turn up at your front door has an undeniable appeal. But there are a lot of other bonuses to choosing a mattress-in-a-box:

  • Buying direct keeps the cost of your mattress lower.
  • Carrying a boxed mattress to your room of choice is much easier.
  • You don’t have to pay to have your mattress set up if you don’t want to – that’s optional!
  • Delivery is often much quicker, easier and cheaper because the mattresses take up less space.
  • They’re just as high quality as a traditional mattress.

Can you try before you buy?

With a bed-in-a-box style mattress, the trial period happens at home rather than you having to visit a shop. This offers a far more true-to-life experience.

It’s worlds apart from the old buying process for mattresses, where you’d normally flip around on them for 5 minutes in a shop and then hope that you’ve chosen the right one. Boxed mattresses offer long trial periods – ours is 100 nights – so you can be completely confident it’s the best option for you. And if it’s not your cup of tea, you can send it back at no extra charge.

Even with boxed mattresses, you can still try before you buy. If you’re in the Leeds area, make an appointment on our website and try our OTTY mattresses for yourself.

The ordering process from start to finish

What happens after I place my order?

Once you’ve placed your order with OTTY, you’ll receive an order confirmation email and delivery of your items typically takes 3-7 working days for mainland UK locations.

What happens during the delivery stage depends on which of our delivery options you choose. You can opt for free doorstep delivery, or if you want a bit of help getting everything set up, we also offer a number of premium delivery services where we can take the mattress to your room of choice, unpack it, remove the packaging and take away the old mattress.

If you don’t want to lift a finger, premium delivery is a fantastic option. But if you’re all about doing it yourself and getting stuck in, here’s how unpacking works…

Unboxing and installing a mattress in a box

Setup is easy! To install your OTTY mattress, all you have to do is follow 4 simple steps:

  1. Take the mattress out of the box.
  2. Unroll the mattress onto your bedframe.
  3. Use the special cutting tool provided to safely remove the plastic wrapping. (If you use regular scissors, you might end up cutting the mattress by accident!)
  4. Wait for your OTTY mattress to expand to its usable size (usually 4 hours).

It can take a few days for the mattress to fully expand into the corners because it was tightly wrapped in storage, but after that, it should be at its optimum shape.

Oh, and if it needs to be said, the OTTY logo should always be right side up – otherwise you’ll be sleeping on it upside-down!

How long do I have to make sure it’s right for me?

When you first get any mattress, whether it’s online or from a shop, it can take a little while to settle into place. That’s why on average it takes around one month to get used to a new mattress.

We give you 100 nights from the day of delivery to make up your mind (although in most instances, our customers don’t even need it!) so you can take your time and get to know your OTTY. However, if you do find it’s not what you need, just get in contact with our team to start our easy returns process.

Do you have to re-box a mattress in a box?

No – and we wouldn’t expect you to! The reason these mattresses can fit into the box in the first place is because they’re specially vacuum sealed into the packaging. In the unlikely event you’re not totally satisfied with your OTTY mattress, get in contact with us to arrange a return and our drivers will pick up the mattress from your property. No postage or awkward repackaging needed.
